The "F" Word

No its not what you think. I'm talking about Father. I remember considering the idea of becoming a father and thinking how hard can it be. I saw it as being task, task and more task. After all that's what was modeled to me. I thought you were suppose to work really hard and pay for things that nobody appreciated and complain loudly. after all that's what was modeled to me.

A few days after turning 17, my ex girlfriend called me to tell me she was pregnant. I was floored, but determined to give my child what was given to me. A father. I had no idea what I was in for. I continued going to school and took a job at night cleaning carpets at TRW. Eventually I took a second job at LAX loading freight on International planes. That man whom I both Loved and hated had taught me a very important lesson and I didn't even know it.

Here I was at 18 working as hard as my father to support my family, cause that's what was modeled to me. It wasn't long before I had some major break through. As I stumbled down my path I made some incredible discoveries. There's nothing like the smell of my infant daughters breath, or seeing her tiny hand in mine. I remember the nights I was tired beyond belief because my daughter was sick. I remember how easy it was to sit by her bed and place cool towels on her for head for hours. I remember her laughing at me because I would make Barbie walk instead of hop, like your supposed to. Who knew? "Dad, its a toy, they don't walk, just make them hop" Ok! I never knew my capacity to love until these beautiful amazing spirits came in to my life.

The more I gave and listened and trusted, the more I got in return. For me being a Father has been the single most important responsibility I have ever been given. The rewards that came with fathering far outweigh any task. As a matter of fact it has been a labor of Love and an education that if it were for sale could not be bought. I owe my Father a debt of gratitude for what he modeled to me. It has enabled me to rewrite the Chacon fathering Handbook. There is no amount of success that will ever make up for failing as a Father.

Peace and Love,

Chacon
