articulating back
Make sure you know what the man means and make sure that he knows that he has been heard.
A critical and powerful tool as a captain lies in the simple art of articulation. By saying back to the man what you have just heard, it allows for clarification, clear communication and instills a level of confidence and acceptance back to the man.
Another powerful aspect is to have the man on your team articulate back to you what you have said. It lets you know you are being heard and communicating well. Test the tool. (Is there anything anyone has to say about that)
Also, by articulating back to the man, you can expand upon the message delivered. It offers an empowering opportunity to further the direction of the conversation.
This is extremely important.
You can move along what you are trying to get across by articulating back. It shows that you are paying attention and builds upon validation of the message and the messenger.
There is no making wrong of the message of the messenger in articulation, and if nothing else, it creates an opening for suggestion and alternative perspectives.
Test the tool. (Is there anything anyone has to say about that)
