How far do you go to tell the truth to your men? How far do you go to help another man get to his truth? How far do you go on your overnight? How far do you go to help another man? Take the time to answer these questions.
AN MDI MAN NEEDS HELP. These are words I read in an email that was sent to all of us in Full Monty a few weeks ago. It was from Jack Rutledge, our Regional Coordinator about a man that was at the Summit in Las Vegas.
His email explained that the man, who was coming to LA to study for his Chiropractic Board Exams, had his plans fall through and he needed a place to stay. We did not know this man except that he is an MDI man.
I immediately contacted him and here’s why. A few months ago, I was looking for some help in Canada since I was headed up there on my first paid vacation ever (thanks to Poker Canyon!). These Canadian men did not know me at all except that I was an MDI man. These men came through for me big time! Here’s the power of MDI.
I contacted long time MDI leader Peter Marcus (in Florida at the time) to find out who he might know in Canada. He put on his thinking cap and came up with a man’s name and email address. As we were talking, he was showing me the power of MDI. He said that if needed, within a couple of hours we could be in contact with 500 men across the country and Canada. I did not need that many, I just wanted a name or two. The power of MDI!
He gave me Brad Leslie’s contact information. I contacted him, telling him I was coming to Calgary. He actually lives in Vancouver so he could not physically take care of me. He put on his thinking cap and got back to me with the name of a man in the Calgary area, Brad Lawrence. I just wanted to meet some men from the Great White North, and possibly go to a Men’s team meeting. I also wanted to see if there was a man’s house I could stay at for a few nights in Calgary. He gave me Jerod Blake’s name who he thought would be perfect for me.
I called Blake, told him my situation and he said no problem! He spoke with his wife and set it up that I could stay with them a few days while in Calgary. I also asked about attending his team meeting that week. They were not having a team meeting because they were having a tribe/division meeting later that week so he would see what he could do about setting up a team meeting.
So I went off to Canada to attend my special retreat at Emerald Lake. After which, coming out of the mountains, I stayed in Canmore which is about an hour from Calgary. Since I could not get a ride to Calgary, Lawrence came and picked me up. Yes, an hour away! Here is a man who did not know me at all but because I am an MDI man, he said, “No problem, I will pick you up!” How many of us would drive to Riverside and pick up a man just because he is an MDI man?
After picking me up and taking up over 2 hours in his day, he brought me to Blake’s house and to a wonderful steak dinner. I asked about the team meeting and he said he set one up for me that night. Wow! Here I am just a guy from Los Angeles, NO, I mean a MAN from Los Angeles and I felt so welcomed and taken care of. I could not believe it.
After a great dinner we were off to the meeting. There were 10 men there from different teams who were attending a special meeting just for me! Again, how many of us would set up or even attend a meeting for a man we do not know?
After being treated to few great days with Blake and his wife I was on my way back to the lower 48!
I won’t go into detail, but a few months later I was going back up there, this time to Vancouver. So I contacted Lawrence and he hooked me up again! Although I did not need a ride or a place to stay this time, they were just as receptive and welcoming! This time there was a scheduled team meeting to attend and I was able to bring my friend who I was staying with to his first meeting. This made me feel really good and my friend was impressed by the power of OUR organization!
To pay it forward, I was able to respond to Rutledge’s email. I had Paul Tripp stay at my place for most of his time in LA. Ford and Sanders came through on the nights he could not stay with me. He even worked for Ford a couple of days to make some extra money.
It really made me feel good to help one of our brothers in need.
So I ask you, “How far would you go?”
